Insect Control Update

By | May 30, 2016

This is the fourth day into my ant control/elimination experiment. I’m inclined to believe it’s working because there were only 5 ants in the bathroom, and maybe 3 ants in the kitchen. I deliberately left some food on the counter in the kitchen to see if they would still come in to eat the food. Normally there would be a whole giant line of ants streaming in and out of the window screen. These ants are so small by the way that they can just walk right through the fiberglass mesh screen.

There was a thunderstorm a few days ago and I turned everything off. That’s when the ants came streaming in because I had left a plate with some honey on it on the counter by accident. I noticed they were making midden piles by the window, so they were cleaning debris out of their nests. I’m guessing that means something is killing them off.

They were doing some strange behaviors too once a couple days ago. I noticed them clustering in threes in the sink (I realize I should have taken a video). They were touching their antennas together and sort of rotating between the different clusters. Almost like they were relaying information, or “huddling” like in football and coming up with a strategy. I never saw ants do this before, but maybe I just don’t understand their biology enough.

Anyway, I’ve done my best to keep the program running constantly. I had to interrupt it a few times, however I was able to keep it running constantly long enough to call it a “day” (or just around 24 hours each day). I used 4 ants as my specimens, one from each room that they were entering from, and an extra one thrown in for good measure.

There will be a couple of thunderstorms on Monday, so I should be able to keep the program running at least until then. The storms are usually when the ants seek refuge in the house. So it will be interesting to see if there are diminished numbers of ant population during that time. I will keep you all posted.
